Beowulf

If you take a college lit class, you’ll probably read Beowulf, the thousand-year-old tale of a Scandinavian champion who vanquishes a monster named Grendel. Before he dies, Beowulf also fights a dragon that threatens his people. This version of the story, adapted by Gareth Hinds, is a beautiful and exciting rendition of those heroic tales. The language is understandable, while feeling old-fashioned at the same time. But it is the art in this volume that stands out. At the end of book 1, as Grendel and Beowulf duke it out, there is a sequence of ten spreads without any words at all.

In figure 4.6, the reader feels the tension and brutality of the fight without an explanation. It’s a masterful combination of art and action that draws you right into the scene. Beowulf praises both the bravery and loyalty of a man whose exploits are still told today. Both exciting and beautiful, this is a superhero story without the modern costumes.25
